the morning. san francisco, we'll go mostly cloudy and only upper 50s for many on the coast and also for those in the north bay. highs today, upper 50s to some mid-60s. but gilroy and also out towards brentwood, maybe antioch to get up to 63, 64. these are just higher clouds. the main system is back mere. it will be pushing inland. it's kind of -- there's a lot of moisture. it's tapped into moisture from the hawaiian islands. there's plenty to go around. we'll need to juice things up a little bit. 36, santa rosa. hayward, 46. again, we start off with a little bit of sun here in the morning. but by this afternoon, noon, i think things go cloudy and temperatures again in the upper 50s or very, very low 60s. farther south and east, you get more sun. a little break in the morning. hopefully rain for everybody by tomorrow. the driest year ever. look for temperatures in the 50s and 60s. here's sal. steve, good morning.

we're looking at a commute that's just average. some areas are not doing well. but others are better. it's kind of averaging out into an okay commute. for example, if you look at 880 here, it's looking pretty good near the coliseum heading up to downtown oakland. when you get to the bay bridge, we don't have a super-huge backup. it's backed up for a little bit. the 880 ramps are the best way to get there, especially if you have fastrack, you will be able to bypass a lot of that traffic. 580, that's a different story. 580 in livermore has been slow the entire way from the altamont pass all the way through. we had a crash on 680. that has traffic backed up into san ramon, heading south towards pleasanton. it gets better if you are on the road after pleasanton. but the traffic is not that bad on 680 and fremont. 101 southbound near belmont we've had a series of collisions. 7:03. back to the desk. all right. thank you, sal. police in santa rosa are asking for the public's help as

they investigate a suspected gang-related stabbing. investigators say an 18-year- old boy was punched, kicked and stabbed outside a middle school on gardener avenue last night. alex savidge is live to tell us what we've learned about the young victim and his attackers. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we understand this teen remains in the hospital this morning with several stab wounds to his upper body. police here in santa rosa say he was attacked last night. it happened right where we are, right behind lawrence cook middle school. police say a group of young men ganged up on this 18-year-old, punching him, kicking him and stabbing him. the victim was found along gardner avenue around 8:00 last night. this is in the roselynn area. paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital. he's expected to survive his injuries. this teen told police he was attacked by a group of seven or eight people. police say they were all gang members. >> he reported that seven to

eight subjects had more or less jumped him and challenged him about his gang affiliation and proceeded to punch, kick and stab him multiple times. >> reporter: the group drove off in an older model silver honda odyssey. the young men behind the stabbing are described as hispanic, late teens, early 20s. the gang crime teams is now investigating. detectives plan to interview the victim at the hospital later on today. a sergeant tells me this attack doesn't appear to be random. he tells me the random who was stabbed may have had some gang ties at some point. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. new this morning, a family has been forced from their home after it went up in flames overnight. the fire broke out at a home on oak springs road in san anselmo shortly after 3:00 this morning. firefighters say it started in

the garage and spread to the second floor. the fire caused about $100,000 in damage. the red cross is helping the family. no one was hurt. and the cause is under investigation. but firefighters say it may have started from an electric car. 7:05. as we speak, we're watching the first real test of the newly opened fourth bore of the caldecott tunnel. it opened saturday morning. east bay drivers have waited years for this. rush hour traffic is pouring through the tunnel. brian flores is right there. how is it going? >> reporter: yeah, traffic moving pretty smoothly as drivers are getting their first chance driving through the fourth bore this morning. but the big difference will be on the opposite side for drivers this morning heading eastbound from oakland to orinda. open on this weekend on saturday, and it is already drawing heavy praise from

caltrans to commuters who say it looks gread. the first cars went through -- great. the first cars went through at 4:00 a.m. the project cost $3 million under budget. it took three years and ten months to complete. for first time in 50 years, caltrans will no longer have to manually force the flow of traffic every day using the middle bore. this is a huge accomplishment. no major injuries in the reconstructiontion. you will see the modern ventilation system. the fans you will see. there's also other safety features. but speaking with commuters, they are excited. >> next thing i know i'm going through this wonderful fourth bore. it's wider. it's straighter. it's flat. caltrans did a great job. i can't tell you how happy this makes me. >> reporter: no hassle with the merging, no wondering whether or not there will be two

tunnels at the end of your journey. that will be huge for a lot of commuters. in terms of the commute, though, a couple of things. the new tunnel probably won't change the traffic back upthat we see, especially in the morning. this time it's westbound on 24. but for the drivers again going in the opposite direction, that's where you will see a major difference. you are taking a look at the offpeak traffic. drivers have a choice to go between either tunnel. norm little, there would be the different -- normally, there would be the dividers. but that's not there any longer. they don't want drivers, if they do go through the fourth bore, talk on your cell phone, take pictures. >> they want you getting -- they want you getting through safely. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, a report says commercial airline pilots

rely too much on automatic systems. the report commissioned by the faa determined the commercial airline pilots have become so dependent on automation, many don't have the skill to manually fly their planes. coming up in 30 minutes, we'll have a live report about the connection between the reliance on automated systems and some recent plane crashes including the asiana airlines crash at sfo in july. 7:09. san francisco's district attorney's office is reportedly investigating a possible coverup in a drunk driving case involving a city firefighter. police arrested veteran firefighter michael quinn on dui charges after he crashed his ladder truck into a motorcyclist in the south of market area back in june. the motorcyclist was seriously injured. today's chronicle reports, the d.a. is looking into whether quinn's fellow firefighters at station one tried to cover up important information tied to the crash. the vallejo city council is

considering a $1 million grant that would help boost the city apolice staff shortage. the grant would enable the department to hire foremowr police officers and keep them employed for the next four years. the city has received similar grants in the past. this tuesday night, the city council will meet to discuss the issue. 7:09. one of the women who survived this weekend's deadly shooting outside of a san francisco nightclub is under police guard this morning at the hospital. the shooting happened just after 2:00 a.m. near 6th and jessie streets. police say two women were shot as they sat in their car. both were rushed to a hospital but one of them died. the investigation and the search for suspects continues. the state of california on track to approve gun sales for a record number of people this year. as of november 1st, the department of justice had processed 780,000 background checks for gun purchases. that puts california on track

to top last year's record number of 817,000. the experts attribute the rise in gun sales to fears about gun control. a new solly makes it very -- policy makes it very clear which employees in walnut creek are responsible for reporting suspected child abuse to police. this comes nine months after such allegations rocked walnut creek's lesher center and city hall. the city fired jason pedrosa in a while abuse scandal involving teenaged girls. the case led to an internal and criminal investigation and revealedded that some -- revealed that some employees didn't realize they were obligated to report the child abuse within 36 hours. 7:11. boy, a uc davis scientist said the meteor, the one that exploded over russia in february, is a wakeup call. researchers studied this

meteor. several samples of the meteor were sent to uc davis to be analyzed. the force of that blast over russia shattered thousands of windows and injured more than 1600 people. one of the uc davis scientists said we need to carefully study these meteors and learn to predict them if we don't want to go the way of dinosaurs. >> kind of an ominous warning. >> yeah. back to the drawing board? well, the next step coming after a big glitch found that b.a.r.t. contracts and what are the odds that we could see another b.a.r.t. strike. i'm hearing things right now. >> yes. >> we may need to take chelter ourselves -- shelter ourselves right now. we need to go off the air. >> yes. >> i believe they are caught on the air with the deadly tornadoes. what two news anchors had to do on the air to stay safe. zboorming -- good morning. we'll looking at the commute.

take a look at these pictures. six people in illinois are dead after a series of storms ripped through the midwest. in total six states are effected by the -- affected by the severe weather. our reporter in washington, illinois, one of the hardest hit areas. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, tori. we now have confirmation, 68 tornadoes ripped through the midwest on sunday. now, we're in washington,

illinois. this is one of the hardest hit areas that's really now seeing the full devastation of the storm. i'm standing in front of what was a residential neighborhood. if you can see behind me, this tornado just leveled many of these homes. really just left a pile of rubble of all of the homes together. authorities have confirmed that six people have been killed. this town of about 10,000 people was almost destroyed as the storms ripped through washington, illinois. >> a lot of people have a pile of rubble still. i don't have anything. my whole -- it's gone. i don't know where it went. >> reporter: taken away by this tornado. the man recording this video, illinois emergency management, they say in just two communities the storms destroyed at least 70 homes. rescuers worked sunday to reach people trapped under the rubble

hiding in their basement. >> it sounded like a freight train. we just heard the sound and i looked over my back woods. and i saw debris field coming at meet. >> reporter: these news anchors had to cut their coverage and evacuate. >> we may need to take shelter right now ourselves. >> we do. >> we need to go off the air. we'll be back when we can. >> reporter: in lebanon, indiana, the windows of the star wrux were blown out -- starbucks were blown out. most notably, 390,000 in michigan alone lost power. the focus will be on the recovering what the people can and rebuilding. and the illinois national guard has dispatched a team of ten firefighters who will be on the ground today for those search and rescue missions. back to you, tori.

>> thank you. 7:17. a severe midwest weather caused major bay area travel delays. early this morning, the last of the delayed flights landed at sfo. we're told that everything is now back on schedule. but it was a different story yesterday with people waiting hours for flights to and from the midwest. people arriving described dark skies and horizontal rain as they were taking off. oakland and san jose international airport are also not reporting any delays this morning. for more information on the severe weather in the midwest, including pictures of the destruction, go to ktvu.com and click on the images tab. 7:18. tomorrow is election day in the city of sonoma. one measure on the ballot. voters are being asked if sonoma should put a limit on the number of hotels in the city that have more than 25 rooms. supporters of measure b say approval will help retain the small town character. critics say new construction or

expansions should be decided on a case-by-case basis. well, construction is starting up again in south lake tahoe. the recession stopped work at a $400 million hotel and convention center right near highway 50. but workers are back on that site. the project includes a $15 million shopping and dining complex. developers say this is the first step to reinvent tahoe as a tourist destination. they are hoping to attract people from all over the world. not just northern california. 7:19. want to check in with sal. sal, dave and i got to drive through the new caldecott tunnel, the fourth bore. nice and shiny. >> the biggest deal would be for people going countercommute and also for those driving on the weekends and highway 13, the people who live there and are used to big backups approaching 24. those may be quite dissipated. we'll be watching.

but i think they will be. let's take a look at highway 24. again, westbound, you won't notice a difference so much except that you will be using the new right-hand bore. the new bore on the right and it's gonna be much nicer for you. but the actual traffic flow will be the same. this is a look at westbound bay bridge. it's about a 10, 15-minute delay coming in on 880. the traffic looks good. that's the best way to approach. the peninsula has been a little bit slow. we've had a couple of problems on 101 including ralston avenue. i would use 280 as an alternate route. 880 is slow if you are driving from 238 all the way down to fremont. has been packed up. i think people are -- i think what people are doing, they are trying to avoid 680. 680 here is just a mess. we've had a number of problems from san ramon to pleasanton and 580 itself is slow into the dublin area. this whole area here is bad. in fact, if i could just like

"x" this out for the morning commute. you know what i mean, right? it's not good. 7:20. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning. mostly sunny. but clouds are beginning to inch in. 39 in pacifica. brandon treating me that. i know we had a lot of 30s up in rohnert park, spweather if you want to tweet me weather information. before i get going, sat with fantastic chicago bears, watching not only the game, but the weather. and then the squall line went through and then it was clear and then the wind picked up. if you are from chicago, you know what i'm talking about. it's 37 at o'hare with gusts to 37 miles an hour. and that was a very strong system as you know which went through the midwest. we have a system inching closer. we could sure use it. temperatures, 30s, 40s, 50s. oakland says 30.

a new report says the obama administration will consider the new insurance market a success if 80% of users can buy healthcare plans online. that's according to a report in the washington post. the report says the 80% goal is a target that administration officials have not made public. it acknowledges as many as one in five people who try to use the website to buy health insurance will be unable to do so. the san francisco animal shelter says more people dropped off their dogs and cats during account economic crisis. the shelter saw mere than a 42% increase over the past five years. from 2012 to 2013, more than 10,300 animals were dropped off in san francisco. the shelter says that was because many owners just couldn't afford the rise in cost of rent and veterinarian care. the shelter also says there are not enough pet-friendly housing units in the city. a puppy adopted from the santa cruz spca this month has become a star on the internet.

the extreme driving seen by the victim's car moments before the crash. that's coming up in a live report. welcome to "mornings on 2." we're gonna check weather and traffic. steve? >> it's been unbelievably dry this year. the rain year starts in july. it's been very dry. we had the one system in september. october was dry. it may take a while to get here. but it sure looks like it's on the way. unfortunately, after that, the models are dry. this may be one and done, which would be another bad sign. hopefully we can get something in here by tomorrow. we've seen .25 to 1 1/2 to 2 pro tuesday into wednesday morning. 30s with some fog, especially in the north bay. it's 30s, very foggy and cold. areas in the low 40s. name is 40. fairfield, 40. concord, 43. some of these temperature, you get the clouds coming in.

we'll get a lot of upper as and low 60s. farther east, maybe south. i think a lot of mid-50s with increasing clouds. they are already beginning to inch in. fog now, some sun. i think a lot of clouds roll in. we'll cloud it up by tomorrow and bring in rain tomorrow and hopefully for everybody by tomorrow. here's sal. good morning. we're looking at one particular commute that's worse than others. that would be westbound 580 and 680. this area here coming in from the altamont pass has been a huge mess. part of it was because a lot of people take 680 south and there were crashes there. but 680 itself is backing up into san ramon. there was a crash southbound, 680 at stoneridge. one at bernal and also one at the interchange. those have been largely cleared but even the alternates are going to be slow like highway 84. people are -- they've heard about the crashes and are an alternate routes. the only advice i have for you is give yourself extra time or

call ahead and let them know you will be running behind because of the traffic. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. that's a little better than normal. 10, 15-minute wait. once you make it on the span, it looks okay in san francisco. we've been watching the slow traffic. the slowest traffic is on 280 and 8 a. there are not -- 8 a. there are not -- 85. there are not major problems. eastbound 24, the commute is much better. let's go to steve. i will pick it up from here, sal. look at this. all lanes of 880 in oakland, they are back open now. but this was the scene early this morning, a horrible, deadly crash. a car that was going northbound on 880 lost control, flipped over onto the southbound side and killed two people. ktvu's paul chambers has been on this story since 4:30. you are back now to tell us what police think caused the crash. >> reporter: things are running smoothly at this hour.

chp reopened the highway two hours ago. but early this morning, it was a different scene as they investigated this deadly crash. now, investigators say that it happened -- there were a total of four vehicles involved, two of which were barely recognizable after the collision. the original collision happened at 880 just before 1:00 when a bpw crashed into a big rig truck. the bmw was upside down when the chp arrived in the southbound lane where it crashed into a third vehicle. >> they were going northbound on 880. it hit the big rig at an undetermined speed. we know it was pretty fast. it bounced along the freeway, jumped the center divide wall and then went head on into the suv there. >> reporter: chp says the bmw was going so fast when it crashed into the third vehicle on the southbound portion. it propelled both vehicles backwards. the accident killed the driver of both vehicles. the driver of the bmw is said

to be in his 40s and the other driver, said to be in his 70s. the driver of the fourth vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the chp says the driver of the bmw was driving so fast, probably upwards of 100 miles an hour. they are still determining the exact mileage. they say it's too soon to say if alcohol played a role in the crash. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, paul. b.a.r.t. management could meet with union leaders as early as today to discuss the rather expensive mistake in that tentative contract agreement. b.a.r.t.'s board said that mistake involving family leave could cost the transit agency up to $44 million over the next four years. but union leaders point out management has already signed off on the deal. the two sides hope to work out an agreement before the b.a.r.t. board meets to vote on the tentative agreement thursday morning. both sides see little chance of

another b.a.r.t. strike at least at this point. a state safety committee meets in san francisco today to take another look to the response to the pipeline disaster in san bruno more than three years ago. the panel is expected to grill members of the state public ults commission which -- utilities commission which oversees pg&e. they claim there's been very few safety improvements since the 2010 fire and explosion in san bruno that killed eight people and destroyed 38 holes. 7:36. a family in richmond begging google. take down a satellite image that shows the body of their teenaged son. the images on google maps, it shows the body of kevin ba remember raw -- barrera. the boy's father found out about the image recently. he wants google to remove the image. >> what's the point to personally -- to show that to

the people pictures of my dead son? >> one technology expert says it's not likely googing will re- - google will remove the image. we asked google for a comment on the satellite image. so far there's been no response. 7:36. a somber milestone today for survivors of the jonestown massacre. today is the 35th anniversary of the worst mass suicide in american history. 200 children died after jim jones ordered his followers to drink cool eaud with -- kool- aid with cyanide. jones died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. aid is arriving in the philippines. a lot of people in remote villages are still waiting for

food and water ten days after the disaster. survivors rushed to the town. more than 5,000 people were killed in the typhoon or were declared missing after it. the company's energy secretary has declared to restore power after christmas eve. the events have been held all around the bay area. at the church in san rafael. parishioners prayed for the typhoon victims and brought two boxes of supplies for them. some have not been able to reach loved ones or families in the philippines. >> my uncle lost his house. my one uncle, we didn't hear from for three days. luckily, they all survived. >> all of the donations will be sent to the philippines in the coming days. 7:38. commercial airline pilots rely too much on automation. that's what an faa study determined just months after

the asiana crash landing at sfo. kyla campbell joins us live from our washington, d.c. newsroom to explain the findings. >> reporter: the wall street journal is reporting on this faa study. it's not been released yet to the public. the study determined pilots can rely too much on automated systems and may be reluctant to intervene. the wall street says a number of crashes around the world are blamed on pilots losing control because of poor situational awareness. and that's suspected as a key factor in the botched landing of an asiana flight in sfo in july. that plane was traveling too slowly. the ntsb said the pilots did not respond quickly enough to automatic warnings in the cockpit. i reached out to the faa. so far i've not heard back. other findings from the 277- page report, i'm working on that for you and we'll have the details after 8:30.

live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. san francisco police are investigating a hit-and-run involving a bicyclist. this happened at 7:00 last night near the intersection of mission and 7th streets. police say they are looking for a white van. they say it look like has front- end damage and a shattered window. this morning, there's no update on the condition of the bicyclist. school officials in vallejo may change the name of one of their high school mascots. vallejo high school has been called the apaches for years. on wednesday, the school board will discuss changing the name. some people say the mascot can be offensive to native- americans. others say it honors the apache tribe. school officials hope to keep the colors red and white. well, tonight, the city of palo alto will debate expanding its out door smoking ban. right now, you can't smoke in parks or within 25 feet of public entrances. the new rules would ban smoking

outdoors downtown towards university avenue and on side streets. it's all in an effort to reduce second-hand smoke and also litert from cigarette butts. if you are planning to visit coit tower in san francisco, you will have to wait a few months. the landmark is scheduled to close today for a five-month renovation project. it will undergo extensive repairs inside and out as well as restoration to damaged historic murals. the $1.7 million project is the largest restoration in the tower's eight-year history. it's expected to reopen in mid- april. 7:41. police in santa rosa are investigating the stabbing of an 18-year-old boy. coming up at 8:00, howsh the attack is -- how the attack is tied to a growing problem in the city. >> reporter: we're live in palo alto where city leaders are expected to decide whether or not police officers should wear cameras. we'll tell you why the department wants they. good morning -- wants them.

cameras. one in the front, one on the back. it would all be in high definition. now, the department would like to start a pilot program for nine of its officers who regularly work as a traffic safety team. a lot of them ride motorcycles. they say it will help them capture -- capture video. the video has become instrumental in law enforcement training and in collecting evidence. city leaders say the camera has served as a toll for officers' safety and accountability. we asked people if they thought the city should spend money on the technology. >> i think it's a good idea to record what they are seeing and make sure everything ask accurate. >> that's too much, you know. i don't think it's necessary. we have one on the street. we got one in the tree. that's -- i mean, my opinion, i don't think it's necessary. >> reporter: the police department installed mobile in- car video systems in all of the patrol vehicles in 2006. but city officials say camera technology has improved

he sexually harassed staffers or hired an escort. we're learning more about the condition of nelson mandela. doctors say mandela is still very ill and he's unable to speak. the 95-year-old civil rights leader has battled lung problems from decades from the 27 years he spent in prison for fighting apartheid. he spent almost three months in the hospital over the summer and is currently in icu at his johannesburg home. the j.f.k. presidential library and museum is unveiling a new website to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his assassination this coming friday. the website is called an idea lives on. it comes from something he said in a speech in february 1963 just months before his death. he said "a man may die. nations may rise and fall but an idea lives on." visitors to the website are

approaching on highway 492. when you get over to the peninsula, 101 has been a mess as well. that may be lending to this backup. dumbarton bridge is better. but you may have to go out of your way to get that done. westbound bay bridge is im-- not improving. in fact, it's become heavier in the last few minutes. it was 10, 15. now it's 20, maybe 25 if you are at the end of the line. still getting a decent commute in the fastrack lanes. 580 again has been slow. i've been showing you the same map the whole time only because it has not improved. i keep thinking we'll see some improvement but this whole area is very slow and so is 680 from alcosta. it looks like it's backed up to -- it looked like it's backed up to bollenjer. if you get on 680 after the pleasant area, it's much better. let's go to steve. a little bit of sun, some

fog. kind of in between. higher clouds beginning to inch in. a lot of 30s. parts of the east bay. but morning sun. then turning cloudy. cloudy, rain to the north. >> more likely tomorrow. it looks like rain will make it. temperatures will be tough. i mean, some of these will be stuck. you get the cloud cover in on us and some areas will be openly in the mid-50s or upper 50s. it's going to be a cool day. a lot of these clouds coming in. 54 to 64 on the highs. i think 54, maybe to the north and some low to mid-60s. but you have to go far east and south. there's the system. but to be honest, the rain is back here. we have a day to go. everything has been so dry. it will be decent amounts to the north. now, temperatures, 30s and 40s. oakland still says 50. livermore, 41. we'll go for some low 60s. it's going to cloud up. any morning sun won't last long. by this afternoon, we go under cloudy skies. temperatures will struggle to get to the upper 50s or low 60s. a few breaks to the west.

some rain? >> tomorrow, we hope. it's been dry, dry, dry. not only the calendar year but the rain year. there are signs tomorrow, tomorrow we could get a little bit of rain in here. unfortunately, after that, maybe not too much. rain returns. it's hope, maybe by tonight. but tuesday, wednesday, look good. pattern is not looking that good. but at least we get something for tomorrow. increasing clowtsdz. there's also fog. combination of the two, nothing net. so by tonight, maybe parts of the -- well, mendocino north might see some. 30s, 40s, 50s on the temperatures. napa at 44. i mean, they were 37, then some of that cloud cover comes in. and that cloud cover will continue to come in. look for a billion bit of a break. not much -- little bit of a

break. not much. cloudy by this afternoon. here's sal. steve, good morning. we're looking at traffic that now is at the peak. the peak came a little bit late this morning. we're seeing a little bit of slow traffic all over the place. let's start and look at traffic pictures. 880 northbound is slow as you drive past the coliseum. the bay bridge toll plaza is backed up more than it has been. that's a 20-minute, 30-minute delay. still getting a decent approach from 880. if you have a fastrack transponder, i think that will be your best bet. now, 85 northbound is very slow from 87. 87 is slow trying to get into downtown. a lot of fender-benders. a lot of little fender scrapers. northbound 101 at 680. there was a crash or southbound 680 at king which is in the same general area. it's been slowing traffic a little bit. as we look at 880, it's very slow from 238 heading down to

fremont. one long line of traffic and the biggest slowdown that remains, 580 getting into dublin and 680 coming out of san ramon to pleasanton. that's been a bad ride. back to the desk. topping our news -- police in santa rosa are investigating a suspected gang-related stabbing. investigators say an 18-year- old boy was punched, kicked and stabbed outside a middle school on gardner avenue last night. alex savidge joins us live with a clue that could lead to arrests. >> reporter: good morning. one long-time neighbor in this area told me this kind of violence is unusual around here. this teenaged victim is recovering this morning in the hospital from several stab wounds to his upper body. he was viciously attacked last night right here behind lawrence cook middle school school. police say a -- middle school. police say a group of young men ganged up on him, punched him, kicked him and stabbed im. the victim was found around

8:00 last night. this is in the southwest part of santa rosa. paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital. police believe he will survive his injuries. the teen told police he was attacked by a group of seven or eight people, all believed to be gang members. now, police say this doesn't appear to be a random attack, though, since the victim may have had gang ties as well. one neighbor couldn't believe this happened around the corner. >> it does surprise me. it does. this is a quiet neighborhood. people don't have any problems here. the neighbors all get along together. it's -- it's a shame that something like this has to happen. >> reporter: the young man behind the stabbing drove off in an older model silver honda odyssey similar toot one we're showing you right now. all of them are described as hispanic, in their late teens to early 20s. the santa rosa's police department gang crimes team is now investigating and detectives are planning to interview the victim at the hospital later on today as they

work to find the men who left him with several stab wounds. live in santa rosa, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, a family has been forced from their home after it went up in flames overnight. the fire broke out at a home on oak springs road in san anselmo. shortly after 3:00 this morning. firefighters say it started in the garage and spread to the second floor. the fire caused about $100,000 in damage. the red cross is helping the family. no one was hurt and the cause is under investigation. but firefighters say it may have started from an electric car. 8:05. san francisco' district attorney -- san francisco's district attorney reportedly investigating a possible cover up in a fire department drunk driving arrest. today's chronicle reports the d.a.

wants to know if quinn, the firefighter, his fellow workers tried to cover up important investigation tied to that drunk driving crash. a grant would allow four more police officers to be hired for the vale police department and also -- vallejo police department and also keep them on the job for the next four years. the city has received grants like this in the past and the city council will start to debate this tomorrow night. as we speak we're watching the first real test of the newly-opened fourth bore of the caldecott tunnel which officially opened saturday morning. east bay drivers have been waiting years for this. rush hour traffic is just pouring through there. this has been for hours. brian flores, you've been watching all of this from out there. brian? >> reporter: yeah, and traffic was moving pretty good until just a few minutes ago. you are taking a live look now. traffic westbound now. coming out of the fourth bore. there was a little bit of a

hiccup this morning a few minutes ago. they had to get a stalled vehicle and towards the tunnel, it looks like there is esa little bit of a fender-bender. it -- there is a little bit of a fender-bender. traffic is moving slower than normal. officially the tunnel opened on the weekend. it's already drawing heavy praise from caltrans to commuters who say it looks great. it was under budget. the tunnel is wider, taller and brighter. you will see the electronic message boards but the ventilation system that will help out in case of a fire. it's got other safety features as well. in terms of buildings tunnel, not an easy -- buildings the tunnel, not an easy task. they had to be careful not to disturb wildlife. they had to use different -- ex- - dasht different excavation equipment -- they had to use

different excavation unit. they did this $3 million under budget. >> i'm guessing, 20, 25 minutes shaving off the commute not to have to merge into one tunnel. when it's bad, it's pretty bad. >> reporter: no hassle with the merging, no wondering whether or not there will be two tunnels at the end of the june journey. tom -- end of their journey. the first tunnels went through the fourth bore on saturday morning. overall, 160,000 cars pass through the tunnel every day. as we take it back out here live, you are looking at the opposite offpeak traffic, towards orin daup. that's where you will see the major difference. no longer will you see the dish vidders. both ton -- dividers. both tunnels will be open in both direction. the chp says if you go through the fourth bore of the caldecott tunnel this morning, please do not pull out your cell phone to take pictures or video. this is something we saw when

the bay bridge opened up. they don't want any accidents going on. enjoy the fourth bore and the commute. we're live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. one of the women who survived this week's deadly shooting outside of a san francisco nightclub is now under police guard this morning at a hospital. the shooting happened yesterday just after 2:00 a.m. near 6th and jessie streets. police say two women were shot as they sat in their car. both were taken to the hospital. but one of them died. a man who did not want to show his face on camera said he saw the gunman. >> he shot in the car. >> the area is known for drug problems and prostitution, people say. but they say things have improved since a police substation opened northern. the investigation and the search for suspects continues. california is on track to

approve gun sales for a record number of people this year. as of november 1st, the california department of justice had processed 78 -- processed 780,000 pack ground checks -- background checks. that's due to beat last year's over 800,000. a hearing set for today in the legal battle to evict a homeless encampment from a landfill in albany. a judge is due to hear a request for a temporarily restraining order to stop the eviction. the city says the albany bulb encampment poses health and safety risks and clearing it is needed so the land can be part of mclaughlin state park. advocates say it lax a homeless celter -- it lacks a homeless shelter. nasa plans to launch a new mission to mars and that's

newscast when the tornadoes headed right to the station. >> if you are in the path of the cell, now is the time to take shelter. get to your basement, get to the center most portion of your home and take cover. i'm hearing things right now, chuck. >> yes. >> we may need to take shelter ourselves right now. >> we do. >> we need to go off the air. we'll be back when we can. >> yes. >> everyone inside the station made it to shelter and there were no injuries. that severe weather caused major delays at bay area airports. early this morning, the last of the delayed flights landed at sfo and we're told that everything is back on schedule. it was a very different story yesterday with people waiting hours for flights to and from the midwest. some delays up seven hours in chicago. people arriving described black skies and horizontal rain. oakland and san jose international airports are also not reporting any delays this morning. for more information on the

game suspension for allegedly using performance-enhancing drugs on a scandal that involved several other baseball stars. an arbitrator is expected to rule on his case sometime later next month. it could soon be more specsive to -- exspevtionive to -- expensive to park in walnut creek. meter rates could rise to $2 an hour. some business owners have expressed concerns these changes could drive away customers, especially on sundays. let's bring sal back. you are keeping an eye on the san mateo bridge. are they behaving for you? >> well, we did have a crash on the other side at the foster city exi three cars are on the shoulder. with you the traffic is begin -- but the traffic is beginning to affect the bridge. it's not a huge deal. when you get over to the peninsula, we've had a couple of earlier crashes there that have made things not great.

you can see it's very slow on the san mateo bridge itself and even approaching it from hayward. bay bridge, not all that bad but there's a backup here. it's about a 10, 15-minute delay. it's improved a little bit. if you're driving on 880 i think that's the best approach. also this morning we're looking at 880 heading south from the san leandro area all the way to fremont. someone just tweeted and said what's wrong with 880? there's no major crashes but it's slow. 680, the crashes in pleasanton have been cleared up. it's backed up into san ramon. 580 is not great. it slows all the way to dublin. we're not having a good monday in the trivalley. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. patchy ground fog. higher clouds are inching closer. a little bit of fog and clouds as you know. the calendar year has been the driest in 164 years of record

mount washington is being moved to san francisco. there it will be dry docked. after, that the ship will move to brownsville, texas to be recycled. it will be the 45th ship to leave the fleet since october 2009. last week, a jury in santa clara county found three girls and their parents liable for defaming a p.e. teacher at a church in san jose. today, the jury will decide how much the student ringleader should pay in punitive damages. on friday, the jury found the defendants damaged john fischler's reputation by claiming he inappropriately touched children. he was awarded $325,000 in compensatory damages. tomorrow we'll focus on the rain. some of the patchy fog in the north bay. a little bit of sun here in the morning and then increases clouds. a lot of 50s or very low 60s. here's sal. good morning. right now, the traffic is doing pretty well if you arive drooing on some -- if you are driving on some commutes. not so well on others. kind of a big difference here. the bay bridge, not bad. this is about a ten-minute delay. we're seeing improvement here. i would say this is a pretty decent commute. however, there are some other commutes. we're still slow getting into the valley is one of them. 237 is slow all the way to downtown milpitas and 8580 getting out of the livermore valley. has -- 580 getting out of the livermore valley has been superslow. if you look at valley, we've had a couple of minor crashes. we've had slow traffic every

where. let's go back to the desk. look at these pictures. all lanes of southbound 880 in oakland are back open. earlier today, there was this, a deadly crash. a car going northbound lost control flipped on the southbound side killing two people and the freeway, it was shutdown for hours. paul chambers still out in the area with more on what the police are saying about that crash. it was a mess, paul. >> reporter: that's correct, dave. things have been running smoothly. but this morning, a total different story. there were multiple vehicles involved in the accident which killed two people. now, the honda crv and the bmw were barely recognizable, mangled after the collision. there were four vehicles in the crash. the original accident happened on the northbound portion of 880 just before 1:00 this morning. the chp says the bmw wassing why gup wards of -- was going

upwards of 100 miles an hour. when the officers arrived, the bmw was resting on its roof. >> the bmw was traveling at a high rate of speed, rear ends the big rig, passes the big rig, jumps the divide here and goes head on into a honda crv. >> reporter: the chp says the bmw was going so fast, it propelled both vehicles backwards. the accident killed the driver of both vehicles. the driver of his bmw was said to be in his 40s. the driver of the fourth vehicle was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. the chp says it's too soon to say if alcohol played a role in the crash. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:34. b.a.r.t. management could meet with union leaders to talk about what's being called an expensive mistake in the

tentative agreement today. that mistake, it could cost b.a.r.t. up to $44 million over the next four years. un your leaders say -- union leaders say management has already signed off on the deal. the two sides hope to fix this before thursday morning. a state safety committee will meet in san francisco today. they will take another look at the response of a pipeline disaster in san bruno. more than three ago. they are expected to grill members of the public utilities commission that overseas pg&e -- oversees pg&e. the explosion in san bruno killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. a family in richmond wants google to remove a satellite image from google maps because they say it shows the body of their murdered son. google map shows the body of 14-

year-old kevin barrera shortly after he was found murdered in 2009. the boy's father said he recently found out about this image on google and is asking google to take it down out of respect for his son. >> when i see this image, it feels like it happened yesterday. really fresh. that bring me back to a lot of memories. >> one technology analyst say it's not likely that google will remove the image. we asked google for a comment but have yet to get a response. happening today -- police officers in palo alto may be getting a new tool they wear that will help them fight crime. city leaders will decide whether to fund body-mounted cameras as well as other technology upgrades tonight. janine de la vega spoke to a police lieutenant within the last hour about the need and joins us now live from palo alto. good morning, janine. >> good morning. well, police say their video

equipment is seven years old. so the example the lieutenant said what if your smartphone was that old with technology constantly changing, the quality of audio and video has dramatically improved. the department wants to start a pilot program for officers that won't have cameras in their cars. now, the department wants to buy body mounted video cameras for nine officers who regularly work the traffic safety team. a lot of them ride motorcycles and they say it will help them capture video once they leave their bikes. police say they need to upgrade the video technology in their patrol cars because they say it's become instrumental in collecting evidence. >> our video system that we've used for the past seven years has given us on a number of occasions information which we can use in court to show an accurate independent record in court of what happened. it has cleared officers of wrongdoing and allegations in

some circumstances. and in other cases, it has shown that our officers do need to improve their work product. >> reporter: currently the video systems in the cars have one front-facing camera. if approached, each car would have a camera in the front, back and the side. they can be activated once the sirens and lights turn on if the car hits something or it can be turned on manually by the officer. the video can be streamed live. the council will vote on whether to vote the $305,000 needed for this upgrade tonight at 6:30 at city hall. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. now there's continuing coverage of the devastating typhoon in the philippines. international aid is starting to get to the coastal cities. but a lot of people in remote inland villages are still waiting for food and water ten days after. survivors rushed a helicopter

delivering supplies to the town of san jose. more than 5,000 people were killed or have been declared missing after the typhoon. the energy secretary is vowing to restore electricity by christmas eve. today is the 35th anniversary of the jonestown massacre, the worst mass suicide in american history. more than 900 people, including 200 people, died after jim jones ordered his followers to drink kool-aid spiked with cyanide. the massacre took place after jones moved his followers to guyana. jim jones later killed himself. tonight, the city of palo alto is said to consider expanding its out door smoking -- outdoert smoking ban in the city -- out door smoking ban in the city -- outdoor smoking ban in the city. new rules would ban smoking outdoors downon on university

avenue and on side streets as well as the california avenue business district. it's designed to cut down on second-down smoke and litter from the cigarette bits. we're learning more about plans to redevelop the jack london square. the san francisco business times reports a developer had committed a plan to build two housing towers with 655 apartments. the towers would be more than 20 stories tall. sites under construction include the corner of broadway and embarcadero. and embarcadero between harrison and alice streets next to the jack london building. it's causing a lot of tension in vallejo, the push to change the mascot of a bay area high school. >> reporter: a santa rosa teenager, brutally attacked last night, left with several stab wounds. we'll tell you what police say prompted the violence. good morning. right now, the traffic is getting better in some areas but it's not better everywhere.

880 in oakland. it happened about 1:00 this morning near 16th avenue. the chp says the man driving a bmw in the northbound direction lost control and flipped onto the southbound side and hit a man in his 70th. both of them died at the scene. the chp says it appears the man in the bmw was speeding. police in santa rosa, investigating a suspected gang- related stabbing that happened last night. investigators say an 18-year- old boy was punched, kicked and stabbed outside of a middle school on gardner avenue. lz also has been out there since early this morning. you are back with the clue that may lead to arrests. >> reporter: one long-time neighbor said he was stunned by this brutal attack. the teenaged victim in this case remains in the hospital this morning recovering from several stab wounds to his upper body. police say a group of young men ganged up on the 18-year-old right here behind lawrence cook

middle school. they were punching him, kicking and stabbing hill. the victim was discovered on gardner around 8 clak last night --le:00 last night -- 8:00 last night. he was rushed to the hospital. he's expected to survive. he tws booked by seven or -- he was attacked by seven or eight members, all suspected to be gang members. one neighbor was surprised. >> the neighborhood is quiet. i've lived here for many years. i don't really have any problems around here. >> the young men believed to be behind the stabbing drove off in an older model silver honda odyssey, similar to the one on the screen. they are all described as hispanic, in their late teens to early 20s. the department's gang crimes team is investigating this attack. detectives are planning to

interview the victim at the hospital later on today trying to find the men who put him in the hospital. live this morning in santa rosa, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. we have new details about another violent incident near an oakland school. police investigating a shooting in the 3700 block of coolidge avenue. it happened around 10:00 last night near the fred finch youth center. that person was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. no arrests have been made. police say at this point, they don't have a description of the suspect. a new study about to be released says commercial airline pilots can rely too much on automated systems. the warning comes four months after the ash crash-landing at sfo. kyla campbell joins us live from our washington, d.c. newsroom to explain the study's findings. kyla? >> reporter: tori, the wall street journal reports some

pilots are so dependent on automation that their manual flying skills pose a risk to passengers. so far, the faa has not confirmed my calls to confirm this report. air safety experts who did the study say automation has played a big role in making flying safe today but they found some pilots rely too much on automated systems and may be reluctant to intervene. that cited as a key factor in the crash landing at sfo in july. the ntsb determined the plane was flying too slowly to land safely. and the pilots did not react quick enough to the automated controls in the cockpit. one of my sources within the airline industry tells me he expects the faa to release the study to the public later this week. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:48. let's bring sal back. i thought you fixed everything on 880, sal?

>> i smile because it's not that great. >> yeah. >> he yeah, i know -- yeah, i know. >> i'm trying to be os mystic. you want -- optimistic. you want to smile. northbound 880, it's getting better. it's not all that bad. it was slow in san leandro. it's slow on high street. let's move to the bay bridge toll plaza. we've seen a lot of improvement here westbound coming into san francisco. it's not been that bad. if you are approaching from 880, it's better. i want to mention that the santa clara valley continues to be slow. we've seen some improvement there. 85 is still slow from 87 to 17. but we're seeing some dissipation. mountain view is still very slow 101 in both directions. let's go to steve. a little bit of filtered hazy sun. multiple layers that get filtered sun coming in. dry, dry october. dry year. october didn't do us any favors rainwise and november, if everything goes according to

plan, it looks like it will be one and done. after thursday morning, i think there's nothing that says any rain up until thanksgiving. things could change. possibility of rain especially mendocino county. it looks like rain makes it tuesday/wednesday. .25 to .50 for and then maybe 1.50 to 2 inches the farther you go. it's been a brutal rain year. we haven't had much. a lot of moisture still back here. the higher clouds will continue to increase. it will be cloudy. 50s on a lot of these temperatures. no rain yet. but a lot of the higher clouds are starting to come in. the atmosphere has been dry. 30s, 40s, had some fog up in the north bay. san jose at 48. we'll go for some upper 50s or low 60s but look for the cloud cover to start to finch in -- to inch in for everybody. the clouds are increasing pretty rapidly. there's a lot of moisture. tapped into moisture back to the hawaiian islands.

it has a little bit of oomph. not a lot of lift or dynamic to it. there is a lot of moisture and over time, that will start to get things going. it may be tomorrow. increasing clouds, rain to the north is likely. and then for everybody tomorrow. cloud/rain forecast doesn't do anything. it kind of stalls out and then slides out into tuesday evening or into early wednesday. finally clearing out late wednesday into early thursday. overall, nothing yet. it's getting closer up to eureka and crescent city. morning sun. we had a little bit. the morning looks to be the best. tomorrow morning, probably talking about rain on the highways there. 50s and 60s on the temperatures. upper 50s and low 60s for everybody. north bay could be hard-pressed to get out of, about 56. if you start out about 56. it will be a cool day for some. rain on tuesday off and on rain on tuesday. clears out thursday. and temperatures with windy

did you see what happened at the buffalo bills game in new york yesterday? look at the screen. one man fell from the third deck down onto the head of another man on the second deck. it happened during the second quarter of the game against the

jets. the man who fell hurt his shoulder, the one below he had a very serious head injury. both men are expected to recover. critics are starting to question the 49ers' claim that their new stadium, levi stadium, will be the most energy-efficient in the nfl. levi stadium will have 1100 solar panels. the 49ers are installing energy- efficient l.e.d. bulbs in who% of the stadium lighting. critics say the solar panels won't pride anywhere near the -- provide anywhere near the electricity needed for a game day. they also say other nfl stadiums have more efficient solar paneled systems. the u.s. supreme court will allah the nsa's surveillance of domestic -- allow the nsa's surveillance of domestic telephone systems to continue. this morning, the justices rejected an appeal from a privacy rights group which claimed a secret federal court improperly authorized the

government to collect the electronic records. the challenge was the first case to reach the court since documents leaked by former contract edward snowden revealed the nsa's surveillance programs. also new this morning, a manhunt is underway for the gunman in paris including a shooting. the surveillance video show esthe gunman opening fire here gravely wounding an aassistant on the first day -- gravely wounding an assistant on his first day. the motive for the attacks is not known. a high school in vallejo may soon change the name of its mascot. vallejo high school has been called the apatch chays for years -- apaches for years. school officials say the name has been a source of tension for a long time. some people say the mascot can be offensive to americans. others say it honors the tribe. the school board will debate
